The Geography department at my university had started an outreach programme where we would uplift the surrounding community through education and informing them about our university programmes, specifically that of the Geography and Environmental Studies department. I have joined this program. We had to plan a day at the nature reserve on our campus for children from a nearby school. Our duties were to present information around the reserve. My presentation was at the wetland within the reserve. Here, I had to inform the kids about the wetland as an ecosystem, my current research which is based on wetlands and the opportunities which exist within in our department, where they would be able to study topics like wetlands from a Human Geography, as well as a Physical Geography perspective. The learners seemed excited and were enthusiastic to learn more, which made me even more excited to present to them. We also facilitated a treasure hunt, where the learners had to piece together a riddle, resulting in them having the opportunity to win prizes. I really enjoyed sharing my knowledge of and passion for Geography and the environment with the learners.
